In anticipation of the Zoo’s first-ever African elephant calves, we’re busy at work preparing our elephant spaces for the two calves expected this Fall.

Elephant babyproofing looks a lot like babyproofing your own home-just on a much larger scale! Extra barriers help prevent calves from wandering into unwanted spaces while pool renovations will help us provide safe places for the calves to explore the water as they grow.

Outside of the elephants’ spaces, expanded medical capabilities have been invaluable for tracking Nolwazi and Amahle’s health throughout their pregnancy and will continue to support the unique care needs of infant elephants.

All of this work is important to provide the highest quality of care for our elephants, whether they are 200 or 12,000 pounds.
